Much of the latter part of Spielberg’s career has been focused on examining history. With Lincoln, Spielberg worked with Daniel Day Lewis (in an Oscar-winning performance) to create a vibrant portrait of one of America’s greatest presidents during times of great strife. Lincoln focuses on the work in the cabinet that led to the emancipation of the slaves as the Civil War raged. The film creates a fully human portrait of Lincoln, with his gentle humor, personal struggles, and fierce determination all beautifully displayed.
